The Big Island runs on a single isolated HELCO grid that has no inter-island ties. When a tropical storm takes down a transmission line in upper Puna, there is no neighboring utility to feed in from. Outages are more frequent and longer than mainland averages, and the rates per kWh are among the highest in the United States. Those two facts together change the math on solar, storage, and standby generation versus what a mainland homeowner would expect. Self-generation pays back faster, storage genuinely matters for outage survival, and a properly installed standby generator is not a luxury — it's the difference between a comfortable weekend and a freezer full of spoiled food.
HELCO has also moved through several net-metering eras. Legacy NEM grandfathered customers, Customer Grid Supply, and the newer Smart Export and Battery Bonus programs each have different export rules and economics. Our job is to make sure your interconnect is correctly classified, correctly metered, and correctly registered with HELCO so you don't leave money on the table or face a non-compliance shutdown later.
We handle the electrical side of rooftop and ground-mount solar — the interconnect into your main panel, the AC disconnect at the meter, production metering where required, grounding and bonding, conductor sizing, and labeling. If you are working with a separate solar installer, we coordinate with them on the DC side (modules, optimizers or microinverters, racking). If you want us to handle the project end-to-end, we partner with vetted Big-Island PV installers we already coordinate with regularly.
Two interconnect approaches we commonly use:
We install AC-coupled battery systems including Tesla Powerwall, Enphase IQ Battery, and SimpliPhi. AC coupling lets us add storage to an existing PV system without replacing the existing inverter. We also handle DC-coupled hybrid-inverter installs for new PV-plus-battery projects. Backup-loads panel sub-panel installation, critical-load circuit migration, and the grid-down auto-island configuration are all part of the standard scope on storage installs.
For homes that want guaranteed power during HELCO outages without relying on PV-plus-battery, we install whole-home standby generators. Standard equipment is Generac, Kohler, or Cummins natural-gas / propane standby units. Sizing is based on actual load measurements, not rule-of-thumb square-footage charts — Big-Island homes vary too much in load profile (electric range, mini-splits, well pumps) for the shortcut to be safe. The automatic transfer switch ties in to your main service and senses utility loss within seconds, starting the generator and transferring critical loads automatically.
Propane delivery on the Big Island is reliable from multiple suppliers, which is why we recommend propane over diesel for nearly all residential installs — quieter, cleaner, and the tank can serve other appliances during normal operation.
The current Big-Island timeline runs roughly four to twelve weeks from HELCO application to Permission to Operate for residential PV, with another two to four weeks if a battery is included. That window varies with HELCO queue depth and whether any service-side upgrades are required (panel upgrade, transformer evaluation, etc). We track every open project against HELCO's response timeline so you always know where you stand.
If your priority is monthly bill reduction, solar alone — sized to match your usage profile — is usually the right answer. If your priority is outage survival, a properly installed standby generator delivers reliable kilowatts for as long as the propane tank holds out. If you want both bill reduction and outage survival, solar plus a properly sized battery is the cleanest answer, though the up-front cost is higher. We'll lay out the trade-offs in writing with rough cost ranges so you can decide based on your actual goals.

The Big Island has some of the highest solar irradiance in the United States by annual average — but that headline number hides a lot of variation. Hilo and the windward Hāmākua coast see significantly more cloud cover and rainfall than the leeward Kona side, and Puna sits in between with a mixed cloud-cover pattern that varies by elevation and proximity to the coast. We don't install or specify modules ourselves — that is the solar-installer's territory — but we coordinate frequently enough that we can offer one observation: high-efficiency monocrystalline modules from a reputable manufacturer with a strong product warranty and a strong U.S. service footprint pay for themselves over the 25-year life of the system, even if the up-front premium is meaningful. The Big-Island climate is hard on cheap modules, and replacing failed modules ten years in is a logistically expensive proposition on a Hawaiian island.
On the electrical side, what we are watching for is balance-of-system quality: AC disconnects rated for salt-air exposure (NEMA 4X minimum on coastal installs), conduit and fittings with corrosion resistance appropriate to the location, breakers and lugs torqued to spec and verified, and labeling that meets HELCO and NEC requirements without being so cluttered that the panel directory becomes unreadable. Those details are not visible to homeowners after the install, but they are exactly the details that determine whether the system is still running cleanly in year fifteen.
Generator placement is a frequent source of regret in Big-Island standby installs because the unit will run for hours during outages and the noise carries on a quiet Puna evening. We discuss placement during the estimate visit and recommend a location that meets manufacturer setback requirements (typically 18 inches from the home and 60 inches from windows or doors), is reasonably hidden from the primary view from the house, and ideally has some natural acoustic baffling between the unit and neighboring properties. Propane tank placement follows similar logic with the additional constraint of delivery-truck access. We coordinate with the propane supplier on tank-set scheduling so the install timeline is predictable.
