Anywhere on the Big Island within a mile or two of the Pacific coastline — which includes virtually all of coastal Puna, Hilo, Hāmākua, and Kona — salt-laden air dramatically shortens the life of standard-grade exterior fixtures. Brass and bronze housings tarnish quickly but survive structurally. Standard zinc or chromed-steel fixtures will corrode through in two to three years. Painted aluminum is a coin toss depending on the coating quality. Inland properties in Mountain View, Kurtistown, and Volcano contend with a different challenge: vog from Kīlauea that introduces sulfur compounds and accelerates oxidation on exposed contacts. The fixture you buy for a Big-Island install is not the same fixture you would buy for the same job in Phoenix or San Diego.
Our default materials policy is therefore: brass, bronze, copper, or 316 stainless on every coastal exterior install — even when the homeowner is price-sensitive, because the replacement-cycle cost of cheaper fixtures dwarfs the up-front savings within five years. Inland installs get powder-coated aluminum or treated stainless. Indoor fixtures follow standard residential practice with humidity-rated cans in baths, kitchens, and lanai ceilings.
LED-retrofit cans for kitchens, hallways, and living spaces. We size for lumen output and beam spread rather than fixture count, which usually means fewer total fixtures than a "one per X square feet" rule of thumb would suggest. Result: even illumination without the flat, over-lit appearance that's become the default in spec-built homes. Pendants are installed with code-correct boxes rated for the pendant weight and length.
Wall-pack, flood, and motion-activated fixtures. We size lumens to actual property dimensions, not to the manufacturer's "good for a 2,000 sq ft yard" labeling. Photocell and motion combinations are tuned so you're not lighting up the gecko at 2am every night. Coastal installs use bronze housings, marine wire, and stainless mounting hardware.
Low-voltage 12V systems with a transformer at the house and direct-burial cable to fixtures. We bury cable at code depth, use heat-shrink waterproof splices, and standardize on solid brass or copper path lights for Big-Island longevity. LED bulbs are warm 2700K — never the bluish 5000K spec-house default that washes out tropical plantings.
Low-voltage step lights, deck-board grazing lights, and lanai ceiling fans with integrated lighting. Hawaiʻi-island lanais see heavy humidity and rain spray, so we use damp-location-rated fixtures and corrosion-resistant ceiling box hardware throughout.
Yes. Vaulted-ceiling installs over open living rooms — common in Hawaiian Paradise Park and many Puna custom builds — require either scaffold or lift access. We arrange that as part of the project scope rather than nickel-and-diming for it. Chandelier weight is verified against the ceiling box rating; if the existing box is the standard non-load-rated type, we upgrade it before hanging anything substantial.
Yes. We install Lutron Caseta, Leviton Decora Smart, and similar systems for both interior and exterior lighting. For homes that also need reliable Wi-Fi coverage to support those controllers — typical in larger Puna and Hilo properties — we coordinate the structured wiring as part of the same job. We do not install proprietary cloud-only systems that lose functionality if the manufacturer goes out of business.
If the housing is still structurally sound, we can sometimes save the fixture by cleaning the contacts, replacing the socket and conductors, and treating the housing with a marine sealant. More often, the practical recommendation is replacement with a marine-grade equivalent, and we provide both options in writing on the estimate.

One of the most undervalued parts of a lighting install is color temperature. Mainland builders default to 4000K or 5000K LEDs because they are perceived as "bright" and "clean" in showroom conditions. In an actual Big-Island home with tropical wood, lava-rock accents, and lush plantings outside the windows, 4000K-5000K reads as harsh, clinical, and slightly blue. We default to 2700K-3000K warm white for living spaces, lanai ceilings, and exterior path lighting — color temperatures that flatter tropical materials, render skin tones naturally, and don't fight the warm light spilling in from the ocean horizon at sunset. Kitchens and work areas can step up to 3000K-3500K where task visibility matters. We almost never spec above 4000K, and we never spec 5000K-6500K "daylight" bulbs unless a homeowner specifically requests it for a workshop or garage. Beam angle is the other lever. A narrow-beam recessed fixture (25-30 degrees) creates a tight pool of light directly below; a wide-beam (60-90 degrees) creates an even wash. Most spec-built homes are over-fitted with narrow-beam cans on grids that ignore the actual furniture layout, resulting in dim transitions and bright spots. We design beam angle and fixture placement to the room, not to a generic floor plan.
Smart-home lighting controls are a recurring conversation with new clients. Our preference is decisive: Lutron Caseta or Lutron RA2 for properties that want robust scene control without cloud dependence, and Leviton Decora Smart for properties that want app-based control with a lighter setup. Both systems will continue to function as light switches even if the internet goes out and even if the manufacturer eventually closes the product line. We do not install systems that lose all functionality when the cloud server goes offline — too many Big-Island residents have already lived through that scenario with first-generation smart-home products. For Wi-Fi-dependent properties we coordinate the structured wiring and access-point placement to support the lighting system reliably across the home.
