Three Big-Island-specific factors shape every EV charger install we do. First, HELCO rates are high, but so is solar self-generation potential — many of our EV-charger customers already have rooftop PV, so we frequently coordinate the charger schedule with the customer's solar production curve. Second, panel capacity is the bottleneck on a meaningful fraction of older Puna and Hilo homes — a 100A or 150A service often cannot support a 40A or 48A Level-2 circuit without either a load-management charger or a panel upgrade. Third, salt-air exposure on coastal Puna and Hilo installs requires marine-rated hardware on every exterior mount, every time.
The good news is that EV adoption on the Big Island is growing fast, and our install pace has matured with it. We have standardized wiring, mounting, and labeling practices that result in clean, code-correct, inspector-friendly installs that pass the first time.
Level-1 (120V, ~1.4 kW). Plug into a standard household outlet. Adds roughly 3-5 miles of range per hour. Adequate for low-mileage drivers (under 30 miles per day) and as a backup, but most Big-Island EV owners will outgrow Level-1 within a few months of ownership. No electrician install required — just a quality outlet on a dedicated circuit if possible.
Level-2 (240V, 7-19 kW). Requires a dedicated 240V circuit and a hardwired or NEMA 14-50 connection. Adds roughly 25-40 miles of range per hour depending on charger and vehicle. This is the standard for any household with one or more EVs as primary vehicles. The vast majority of our EV-charger installs are Level-2.
We do not push a specific brand. We confirm what vehicle you have, what panel capacity you have, what your charging schedule looks like, and recommend accordingly. If a load-management charger lets you skip a panel upgrade, that's often the best answer. If you're already adding solar, we may steer toward a unit with better integration.
Yes — Hawaiian Electric (which owns HELCO) periodically runs EV-charger rebate programs for residential and workplace installs, and there is also a federal tax credit for residential EV-charger installs in many tax years. Eligibility and amounts change, so we won't quote specific dollar figures here, but during your estimate we'll let you know what programs are currently active and what documentation you'll need.
It depends on three things: the panel's main breaker rating (100A, 150A, 200A, 400A), your current peak load (existing appliances and circuits), and the charger's amperage setting. A 200A panel in a typical home can almost always accommodate a 40A or 48A charger without modification. A 100A or 150A panel often requires either a load-management charger or a panel upgrade. We run the math on your specific home during the estimate visit and lay out the options in writing.
Yes. Commercial and multi-unit EV-charger projects are part of our regular work — typically dual-port ChargePoint or Wallbox units with shared-current load management. We coordinate with the property owner, HOA board, or facilities manager on placement, signage, electrical service capacity, and the optional networked-payment side if the units are revenue-generating.

One of the most common mistakes we see on owner-installed EV chargers is treating a NEMA 14-50 receptacle as an EV-charging endpoint. The receptacle itself is rated for occasional 240V appliance use — an RV plug, a welder, a kiln — not for continuous-duty EV charging at 40A for hours every night. Cheap 14-50 receptacles will deform, discolor, and eventually fail under that thermal cycling. If you are using a NEMA 14-50 connection for EV charging, the receptacle should be a heavy-duty industrial-grade model (Hubbell or Bryant, typically), not a residential bargain-bin part. Better still, for permanently mounted home EV chargers we recommend hardwiring the EVSE rather than plugging into a receptacle at all — eliminates the receptacle thermal-failure mode, allows the EVSE to charge at its full rated current without derating, and produces a cleaner, more durable installation.
Conduit and cable-run quality matter too. For a garage-interior install, NM-B cable is acceptable through wall cavities to the charger. For exterior installs or runs across an unfinished basement or attic, we use either MC cable or wire-in-conduit (THHN/THWN-2 in EMT). Conductor sizing is always the next size up from the calculated minimum when the run is long — voltage drop on a 100-foot run to a detached garage is real, and we don't want to be the install that delivered 220V to the charger because we sized to the table minimum instead of the actual conditions.
Big-Island households are increasingly going from one EV to two, which raises a panel-capacity question. Two 48A Level-2 chargers running simultaneously is 96A of continuous load. Even on a 200A panel that is a lot of the available capacity. Solutions: load-managed dual-port chargers (Wallbox Pulsar Plus and ChargePoint Home Flex both support this) that share a single 50A circuit and dynamically allocate current; or sequential-charging configurations where the second charger only activates when the first finishes. Either approach lets a two-EV household run on a single dedicated circuit without forcing a panel upgrade. We design for the household's actual charging pattern — most two-EV households do not actually need both vehicles charging at full speed simultaneously.
