Why Hilo is our second home.

Hilo is the largest city on the Big Island and the most varied service environment we work in. Plantation-era homes near Banyan Drive and Liliʻuokalani Gardens routinely date to the 1920s and 1930s and contain electrical infrastructure that has been patched layer-on-layer for a century. Newer construction in upper Hilo and around the airport runs the modern spectrum from rebuilt mid-century homes to fully off-grid solar properties. Commercial work — restaurants along Kamehameha Avenue, bay-front hospitality, light industrial in the Hilo airport corridor — fills out our Hilo project mix.

The Hilo climate is the wettest of any U.S. city by annual rainfall, which has implications for everything from underground conduit waterproofing to exterior fixture rating to grounding-electrode corrosion. We treat Hilo installs as inherently damp-environment work, and we don't cut corners on weatherproofing because doing so generates callbacks within a season.

What electrical work looks like in Hilo specifically.

Older Hilo homes — particularly the wood-frame plantation cottages around the downtown core and Waiākea — typically need at minimum a panel upgrade and selective rewire to safely support modern loads. The original electrical service on these homes was often 60A or 100A, sized for a single light circuit per room and one or two appliance circuits. Adding modern kitchen appliances, AC, and an EV charger to that infrastructure without rework is exactly how we end up replacing scorched panels years later.

In Hilo's newer subdivisions (upper Hilo, Kaumana, Waiākea Uka), 200A service is now the default and the work shifts toward optimization: solar interconnects, battery storage, Level-2 EV chargers, smart-home controls, and high-efficiency mini-split conversions. Commercial work follows similar lines — restaurants and small retail spaces along Kamehameha Avenue are increasingly converting to LED throughout, adding EV charging for customers, and adding standby generation for outage resilience.
