Do you serve the entire Big Island of Hawaiʻi?
We serve the Puna and Hilo districts as our primary territory — Pāhoa, Hilo, Keaau, Mountain View, Volcano, and Kurtistown — with project-by-project coverage extending to Kona and Hāmākua. Hawaiian-island travel logistics and salt-air conditions are baked into every estimate so you never face surprise fees.
Is Hale Kanaka Electric licensed and insured in Hawaiʻi?
Yes. Hale Kanaka Electric operates as a licensed Hawaiʻi electrical contractor with current general liability and workers-compensation coverage. We can email a current Certificate of Insurance to any homeowner, property manager, or HOA before work begins.
How fast can you respond to an outage or hazard call?
Most Puna District emergency calls receive a same-day response from our Pāhoa base. We prioritize loss-of-power, scorched outlet, and rooftop-PV fault calls and coordinate with HELCO whenever the service drop is involved.
Do you handle solar and battery interconnects with HELCO?
We design and install AC and DC-coupled photovoltaic interconnects, pull the HELCO permit, and coordinate net-energy-metering, customer-grid-supply, or Battery Bonus paperwork with your solar installer or directly with you.
Do I need a panel upgrade before installing an EV charger?
It depends on your existing main breaker rating, your current peak load, and the charger's amperage setting. A 200A panel in a typical Big-Island home can usually support a 40A or 48A Level-2 charger without modification. A 100A or 150A panel often requires either a load-management charger or a panel upgrade. We run the math during the estimate visit and lay out the options in writing.
What standby generator size do I need for hurricane prep?
Sizing depends on what you actually want to run during an outage. A bare-minimum critical-loads setup (refrigeration, well pump, a few lights, a fan or two) can run on a much smaller unit than a whole-home backup that includes AC, electric range, and water heater. We measure your real load profile, ask what your priorities are during an extended outage, and size accordingly. Most Big-Island residential standby installs land in the 14kW to 22kW range running on propane.
How long does a typical panel upgrade take from start to finish?
Most residential 200A upgrades are a single day on-site, with a power-off window of roughly four to six hours coordinated with HELCO. 400A services and overhead-to-underground service conversions typically run two days. The total project timeline from signed estimate to final inspection is usually two to four weeks, mostly driven by HELCO scheduling and county permit turnaround.
Do you offer financing?
We do not push proprietary financing or partner with high-pressure financing platforms. If you want to use your own home-equity line, a personal loan, or a manufacturer-direct financing program for solar or generators, that is your call and we will work within whatever payment timeline that requires. We bill on a transparent deposit-plus-progress schedule on larger projects.
What's the difference between knob-and-tube and modern wiring?
Knob-and-tube was an early-1900s wiring method using individual hot and neutral conductors strung through porcelain insulators (knobs) and protective tubes through framing. It has no equipment grounding conductor, the insulation is typically rubber that has gone brittle with age, and most home insurance carriers will not renew a policy on an active knob-and-tube system. Modern wiring uses NM-B or MC cable with hot, neutral, and equipment-ground in one jacketed assembly, AFCI and GFCI protection at the panel and at devices, and rated insulation systems.
Can you install lighting in a vaulted or two-story ceiling?
Yes — vaulted-ceiling and high-ceiling installs are routine. We use scaffold or lift access as needed, included in the project scope rather than billed as a surprise extra. Ceiling-box ratings are verified against the fixture weight; if the existing box is not load-rated we upgrade it before hanging anything substantial.
Do you do commercial electrical work or only residential?
Both. About two-thirds of our project work is residential, but we routinely handle commercial lighting retrofits, restaurant and hospitality EV-charging projects, small-business panel and service work, and HOA common-area electrical projects. Larger industrial scopes are handled case-by-case based on schedule capacity.
Can you remediate aluminum branch wiring without a full rewire?
Yes. AlumiConn or COPALUM connectors at every aluminum-to-device and aluminum-to-copper splice is an accepted alternative to full rewire in most insurance and code contexts. We document every connection with before/after photos so you have the paperwork your insurance carrier will ask for. If you prefer a full rewire to eliminate aluminum entirely, we estimate that option in parallel.
What does a Big-Island electrical permit cost?
Hawaiʻi County electrical permit fees vary by job scope and are set by the county, not by us. They are included as a separate line item on your written estimate so you can see exactly what the county is charging. Permit fees are passed through at cost — we don't mark them up.
Do you work on whole-home Wi-Fi and structured wiring?
We install the in-wall low-voltage runs — CAT6 data drops, coax, audio, and structured-wiring termination — and we install access-point mounting boxes and power. Active networking-equipment configuration (Wi-Fi mesh setup, router programming) we typically hand off to an IT or smart-home integrator, though we can recommend partners we work with regularly.

Will my insurance carrier require a panel upgrade before they renew?
Increasingly, yes — particularly in Lava Zones 1, 2, and 3, and particularly for panels older than 25 years or with Federal Pacific Stab-Lok / Zinsco gear. Carriers are asking for either a wire-condition certificate or a recent panel-upgrade permit number. We provide both at close-out.
Can you pull a permit in Lava Zone 1 (Leilani)?
Yes. The County of Hawaiʻi Department of Public Works issues permits in Zone 1 with disclosure language about active-flow risk. We handle the permit submittal, the homeowner signs the disclosure, and the inspection schedule runs the same as anywhere else on the island.
Does HELCO require special equipment for east-side interconnects?
HELCO interconnects follow Rule 14H statewide. East-side work tends to be salt-air territory, so we default to marine-grade terminations and stainless hardware regardless of HELCO requirement. The interconnection application, NEM agreement, and Permission to Operate paperwork are handled in-house.
Is whole-home surge protection actually worth it on the east side?
Yes — disproportionately so. Tropical storm season plus vog-driven HELCO insulator faults push more transient events through Puna service drops than most of the mainland sees. A Type 2 SPD at the panel runs a few hundred dollars installed and pays back the first time a nearby pole takes a hit.
Do you work off-grid in Hawaiian Acres / Orchidland?
Routinely. Most of inland Puna has either no HELCO service drop or an expensive line extension. Battery-first PV with a propane or diesel generator backup is the standard build. We design, install, permit, and service the full stack.
